Mercedes driver George Russell claimed victory in the first sprint race of the 2026 Formula One season at the Chinese Grand Prix after a dramatic nineteen lap contest in Shanghai.

Russell finished the sprint ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Sir Lewis Hamilton completed the podium after an explosive opening stint that briefly saw the Ferrari driver take the lead.

Hamilton produced one of the standout moments of the race at the start. Launching from fourth on the grid, the seven-time world champion surged past Lando Norris before the end of the opening lap, then swept around the outside of Russell at Turn One on the following lap to take the lead.

Russell quickly fought back. The Mercedes driver briefly reclaimed the position before Hamilton once again attacked around the outside of Turn One on the following lap to retake the lead.

Behind them, Leclerc made strong early progress to move into third place as Ferrari placed both cars in contention near the front.

By lap four Hamilton led Russell, with Leclerc running third ahead of McLaren teammates Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli recovered to sixth after a difficult launch from the front row.

Russell regained control of the race on lap six, reclaiming the lead as the fight at the front intensified.

Two laps later Leclerc joined the battle when he moved down the inside of Hamilton at Turn One to take second place while Russell began to pull away at the front.

Antonelli meanwhile had climbed to fourth and was closing rapidly on the Ferraris despite carrying a ten second penalty for a collision with Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.

Hamilton continued to pressure Leclerc and briefly regained second place on lap nine before the race was interrupted.

A yellow flag appeared on lap thirteen after Audi driver Nico Hülkenberg stopped on track with a mechanical failure, bringing out the Safety Car.

The front runners all pitted for fresh tyres during the neutralisation. Russell retained the lead ahead of Leclerc, while Norris moved up to third after exiting the pits ahead of Hamilton.

Liam Lawson briefly climbed to fifth after choosing not to pit, while Antonelli served his ten second penalty during his stop and rejoined seventh behind Haas driver Oliver Bearman.

The Safety Car returned to the pits at the end of lap sixteen.

At the restart Piastri immediately went on the attack, overtaking Bearman and Antonelli to move into sixth before passing Lawson later in the lap to climb into fifth place.

Hamilton soon regained momentum, overtaking Norris for third place at Turn One on lap eighteen.

Antonelli continued his recovery drive by moving up to sixth and then fifth as the sprint race entered its closing stages.

Russell held firm on the final lap to secure victory ahead of Leclerc, with Hamilton completing the podium.

Norris finished fourth ahead of Antonelli in fifth, while Piastri claimed sixth place.

Lawson finished seventh with Bearman eighth, while Max Verstappen crossed the line ninth ahead of Alpine driver Esteban Ocon in tenth.

The sprint result gives Russell early momentum heading into the remainder of the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.
