The Excitement of the London E-Prix
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is in London for the season finale. Zane Maloney is aiming for his first points in his rookie season. The Barbadian-born driver is determined to close out his debut year on a high note. The 2.09km indoor and outdoor circuit at the ExCeL Centre presents a unique set of challenges.
Maloney has spent countless hours in the simulator preparing for this track. He is ready to take on the ever-changing surfaces, lighting conditions, and tight corners. The track's combination of flowing chicanes and high-speed sections promises to test every aspect of his driving skills.
"London is a really interesting track as a driver," Maloney shared. "With numerous challenges, surface changes, and flowing chicanes. I’ve spent a lot of time in the sim preparing for the final rounds of my rookie season in Formula E. Hopefully, this, combined with the improvements we’ve made over the past few races, will enable me to score my first points for the team.”
A Weekend of Opportunity
This weekend represents a significant opportunity for the Bajan to showcase his growth and progress throughout the season. Despite facing early technical setbacks, including issues in Berlin, he has consistently shown resilience. Maloney has improved his pace and understanding of the car. As Lola Yamaha ABT’s only rookie, he has learned valuable lessons from each race. His confidence and performance have steadily built up. With each race, his potential has become increasingly evident.

Mark Preston, Motorsport Director for Lola Cars, reflected on the team’s progress and Maloney’s development. "Berlin was a very challenging weekend for the team, with a big accident for Lucas and a technical issue for Zane. However, we really came together as a team and showed large improvements in pace. Both of which will set us in good stead for the final rounds of our first season here in London."
The team’s journey this season has been marked by setbacks and growth. However, the overall focus is on building momentum for the future. Maloney's performance has shown promise. His contributions, combined with the team's collaborative spirit, have allowed them to improve their standing in the championship consistently.
Learning from Experience
Teammate Lucas di Grassi has been integral to this development. He brings years of experience to the team. His steady performance has provided valuable insights and feedback. This has helped the team adapt and improve race after race. "I'm really looking forward to racing here in London," di Grassi shared. "The circuit is so different from anything else we race on throughout the season. The mix of indoor and outdoor elements and varying grip levels keep us on our toes. There’s always a fantastic atmosphere at the race."
Heading into the final round, Lola Yamaha ABT is sitting in 11th place in the Teams’ Championship with 30 points. While this position may not reflect the team’s aspirations, it’s a strong foundation for the future. Maloney is focused on helping push the team higher in the standings.
Aiming for a Strong Finish
Thomas Biermaier, CEO of ABT, acknowledged the challenges of the season. He emphasized the team's determination to end on a high note. "This weekend marks the final E-Prix of the season and our third home race. It has been a long and hard season, with many ups and downs. However, we're hoping to end it with a strong performance, finishing in the points. Everybody has been working incredibly hard, and the team deserves a good result here in London."
For Maloney, the London E-Prix is an opportunity to demonstrate the hard work and preparation he’s put in over the season. The challenges of the London circuit, with its mix of indoor and outdoor elements, will test his adaptability and precision as a driver. The Barbadian’s focus is clear: secure his first points and end the season on a high.
