Max Verstappen claims 4th win at Spanish Grand Prix

Sir Lewis Hamilton back on the podium with a 3rd place finish

Max Verstappen secured a well-deserved victory at the Spanish Grand Prix today (June 23), marking the 4th time in his career that he has won at this circuit, reports Damian Hall.

This win also marks his 61st career victory, continuing a streak that began at this very track in 2016.

Starting the race in 2nd, Verstappen took the lead on the 3rd lap from Mercedes’ George Russell, who had surprisingly surged to the front from 4th on the grid by utilising the slipstream on the long run down to Turn 1.

In a post-race interview, Verstappen said of his performance: “It was just a management race throughout.”

Pole sitter, McLaren’s Lando Norris finished 2nd after a bad start that he never fully recovered from, despite some gutsy strategy calls.

Norris did, however, manage to secure the fastest lap of the race. He noted after the race: “I know that I can just work on it for the next time, but apart from that, a good amount of points.”

For the first time this season, Sir Lewis Hamilton made his way to the podium with an impressive 3rd place finish.

After a poor start, Hamilton lost a position and found himself battling the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz for 4th.

During his climb back to 3rd, Hamilton gave the crowd a thrilling display of close passing at Turn 1, each move so tight you could fit a piece of paper between the cars.

“It’s been a solid weekend. I have to say a big thank you to the team,” Hamilton said. “The strategy and the pit stops were really on point. Unfortunately a bit like Lando I got a really bad start and obviously lost ground to the Ferraris so it was a bit of a battle to get back to where I am now”.

Hamilton’s teammate and fellow Brit, George Russell, finished 4th, capping off a strong performance for Mercedes.

Fans were treated to an exciting race with no retirements, showcasing the skill and determination of all the drivers.

Formula 1 now heads to Austria for the second stop of the triple-header, with the third being in the UK.

The strategies and performances in Spain have set the stage for an exciting continuation of the season.
