Pascal Wehrlein delivered when it mattered most in Round 16 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, converting pole position into victory to take the championship lead ahead of Sunday’s season finale in London.

“Very happy, that’s exactly what we needed, being competitive in the Free Practice sessions, but then also putting both cars on the first row in quali and in the race executing our strategy,” Wehrlein said after the race.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team driver secured his third victory of the season and the 11th of his Formula E career, moving five points clear of Jake Dennis at the top of the Drivers’ World Championship with just one race remaining.

Starting from pole alongside Porsche teammate Nico Müller, Wehrlein immediately set about controlling the race and had opened an advantage of more than two seconds by Lap 3.

Behind the Porsche pair, Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans was looking for a way through as he attempted to maintain his championship challenge.

Jaguar brought Evans in for his mandatory PIT BOOST before sending him into ATTACK MODE, helping the New Zealander move ahead of Müller and putting him in a position to challenge Wehrlein.

However, the complexion of the race changed dramatically on Lap 21.

Lucas di Grassi’s Lola Yamaha ABT required recovery at Turn 9, triggering a Full Course Yellow at precisely the right moment for Wehrlein, who had yet to complete his mandatory PIT BOOST stop.

With the field slowed under the Full Course Yellow, Wehrlein was able to make his mandatory stop while losing considerably less time than those who had already pitted under racing conditions.

For Evans, who had already completed his stop, the timing proved costly.

Wehrlein acknowledged after the race that fortune had played a part.

“On my side, on the luckier end. It was something we discussed before to cover that risk of intervention, therefore we are very happy about today and we focus on tomorrow,” he said.

Once racing resumed, Dennis emerged as Wehrlein’s closest challenger.

The Andretti Formula E driver worked his way forward, passing António Félix da Costa around the outside at Turn 1 before making a similar move on Dan Ticktum to climb into second.

Da Costa later recovered third for Jaguar after getting back ahead of Ticktum, but out front Wehrlein remained in control.

The Porsche driver managed the remaining laps to complete a pole-to-victory performance and, more importantly, put himself in the strongest position heading into the final race of the season.

Dennis’ second-place finish ensured the Brit remains firmly in the title fight, but Wehrlein will head into Round 17 with a five-point advantage.

Evans also remains mathematically in contention but now sits 21 points behind Wehrlein, leaving the Jaguar driver with a considerably more difficult route to his first Formula E Drivers’ World Championship.

For Evans to take the title, he will need to score at least 22 points in the finale while both Wehrlein and Dennis fail to score.

After a season in which the championship battle has repeatedly changed hands, it will now be decided in the final race.

Round 17 takes place at ExCeL London on Sunday, with Wehrlein, Dennis and Evans heading into the season finale still mathematically in contention for the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E Drivers’ World Championship.
