After 15 years away from the grid, Toyota returns to F1 through a technical alliance with Haas F1 Team focusing on engineering innovation, talent development, and unfinished business in motorsport.
The American team announced a multi-year partnership with Japanese-owned Toyota Gazoo Racing, marking Toyota’s first return to Formula 1 since its withdrawal in 2009. The collaboration will combine expertise in vehicle development, with Toyota offering technical, design, and manufacturing support, while Haas contributes with technical and commercial benefits.
Toyota last competed as a works team in F1 from 2002 to 2009. Despite a significant financial investment during that period, the team failed to secure any race victories, and the 2008-09 financial crisis forced the Japanese manufacturer to exit the sport. Following their departure, Toyota shifted focus to the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and World Rally Championship (WRC), where they have enjoyed significant success
The partnership with Haas does not signal a full-scale return for Toyota as an engine manufacturer or a standalone team. Instead, it allows Toyota to re-engage with the sport at a lower financial risk, focusing on developing engineering expertise and nurturing young Japanese talent. The collaboration includes testing opportunities for drivers using older Haas machinery, reflecting Toyota’s desire to foster future F1 talent without the burden of running a full factory team.
Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, expressed personal regret over the past decision to leave F1, acknowledging it limited opportunities for Japanese drivers. This new partnership aims to bridge that gap by creating pathways for Japanese talent while also helping Haas enhance its competitiveness on the grid.
Toyota branding will debut on Haas cars during the upcoming United States Grand Prix, highlighting the immediate impact of the partnership.
