British rider Scott Ogden will start Sunday’s Moto3 race from pole position after making history at Silverstone, while championship leader Máximo Quiles has been ruled out of the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Great Britain following a qualifying crash.
Ogden delivered in front of his home crowd to become the first British rider to claim a Moto3 pole position at Silverstone, leading a 1-2 for CIP Green Power.
His teammate Adrián Cruces secured second on the grid, while Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider Valentín Perrone completed the front row in third.
The result gives Ogden a prime opportunity to convert his historic qualifying performance into a home victory when the Moto3 field returns to the Silverstone Circuit on Sunday.
However, qualifying also produced a major development in the championship fight.
Quiles crashed during the session and was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the British Grand Prix weekend.
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider arrived at Silverstone leading the Moto3 World Championship, making his absence from Sunday’s race a potential turning point in the title battle.
With Quiles unable to score, his closest championship rivals now have an opportunity to significantly reduce his advantage before the series moves on from Britain.
For Ogden, however, the focus will be firmly on converting Saturday’s breakthrough into a result on Sunday.
The British rider has put himself at the head of the field at one of the biggest events on the MotoGP calendar and will have teammate Cruces alongside him when the lights go out.
With Perrone completing the front row and the championship leader absent, Sunday’s Moto3 race is set to offer both a major opportunity for the home favourite and potentially significant consequences for the championship.
