IndyCar champion Alex Palou has told a UK High Court that McLaren misled him with promises of a Formula 1 seat that never materialised. The four-time IndyCar title winner was recruited by McLaren in 2022, but he claims the team’s leadership gave him false assurances about his future in F1.
McLaren, meanwhile, is suing Palou for 20 million dollars, accusing him of breaching his contract by refusing to move to their IndyCar programme. Palou accepts that he broke the deal but says McLaren acted in bad faith, leading him to believe he was next in line for a Formula 1 seat.
He told the court that Zak Brown compared him to Oscar Piastri and suggested a clear pathway to F1. Those promises, Palou argues, were never real. Within months, McLaren signed Piastri and effectively closed the door on him.
The case highlights how complex the modern driver market has become and how ambitious young drivers can find themselves caught between opportunities and legal battles. If Palou succeeds, it could change how future contracts in motorsport are written and how teams manage the ambitions of top-tier talent.
McLaren will fight hard to defend its reputation, but the situation serves as a reminder that the road to Formula 1 can be as ruthless behind the scenes as it is on the track.
