Oliver Solberg will return to the scene of his maiden FIA World Rally Championship victory this week hoping Delfi Rally Estonia can reignite a season that has promised much but delivered too few results.
The Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 driver arrives in Tartu fifth in the drivers’ standings after a difficult run of rallies that has seen his outright pace repeatedly undermined by crashes, punctures and mechanical problems.
Twelve months ago, the fast gravel roads of Estonia marked a career-defining moment for Solberg. Competing in a top-class Rally1 car for the first time with Toyota, the Swede produced a standout performance to secure his first WRC victory and announce himself as one of the championship’s brightest young talents.
However, despite opening the 2026 campaign with victory at Rallye Monte-Carlo, Solberg’s momentum has stalled.
A mechanical issue ended his bid for victory in Kenya, while accidents in Croatia, Gran Canaria and Japan proved costly. More recently, a puncture on the opening stage in Greece was followed by another off-road excursion, leaving him to salvage just a single Super Sunday point from the weekend.
The pace has rarely been questioned.
Instead, Estonia presents an opportunity for Solberg to finally combine his speed with consistency across an entire rally, something that has eluded him for much of the season.
The event is regarded as one of the fastest on the WRC calendar, with wide gravel roads, blind crests, high-speed jumps and technical sections demanding total commitment from drivers while punishing even the smallest mistakes.
Toyota arrives in Estonia with several storylines.
Championship leader Elfyn Evans holds an 11-point advantage after limiting the damage during a difficult Acropolis Rally Greece, despite opening the road and suffering two punctures. Takamoto Katsuta, meanwhile, celebrates his 100th WRC start following his maiden Acropolis podium.
Eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier also heads to Estonia in strong form after taking maximum points in Greece to move within 37 points of Evans in the championship, despite contesting only a partial campaign.
Toyota’s line-up is completed by Sami Pajari, who has enjoyed previous success on the Estonian stages, while Hyundai will field Thierry Neuville, Adrien Fourmaux and Esapekka Lappi as it looks to halt Toyota’s recent dominance. M-Sport Ford’s hopes rest with Josh McErlean, Jon Armstrong and local favourite Mārtiņš Sesks.
Delfi Rally Estonia features 18 special stages covering 301.80 competitive kilometres, with the event concluding on Sunday at the Kääriku Wolf Power Stage.
