Jorge Martin delivered a perfect Saturday at Silverstone, claiming a new lap record and pole position before converting it into a lights-to-flag Sprint victory as Aprilia swept the podium at the British Grand Prix.

The Aprilia Racing rider began the day by setting a 1:56.160 in qualifying, beating SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team’s Raul Fernandez to pole by just 0.021 seconds. Ai Ogura put the second Trackhouse Aprilia third, completing an all-Aprilia front row for the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Martin’s lap also made him the eighth different polesitter in the last eight Grands Prix held at Silverstone.

Fabio Di Giannantonio qualified fourth for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, ahead of Martin’s Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi in fifth and reigning World Champion Marc Marquez sixth for the Ducati Lenovo Team.

Alex Marquez headed the third row for BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP in seventh, with Franco Morbidelli eighth and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta ninth.

Martin then made full use of pole when the lights went out for Saturday afternoon’s 10-lap Sprint.

The championship leader launched cleanly and retained the lead into Turn 1, while Ogura moved into second. Di Giannantonio climbed to third as Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez battled behind.

Fernandez, who had come within 0.021 seconds of pole earlier in the day, saw his Sprint unravel when he lost the front at The Loop while running sixth.

At the front, Martin began to establish himself ahead of Ogura, while Bezzecchi worked his way through the field.

The Italian eventually passed Marc Marquez before closing a gap of more than a second to Di Giannantonio. With four laps remaining, Bezzecchi made his move at Copse to take third and put three Aprilia-powered machines into the podium positions.

Martin remained in control at the front and crossed the line to claim his third Sprint victory of the season, with Ogura second and Bezzecchi completing Aprilia’s first 1-2-3 finish in a MotoGP Sprint.

Alex Marquez was the highest-placed Ducati rider in fourth, while Di Giannantonio slipped to fifth after struggling for rear grip in the closing stages.

Acosta finished sixth for KTM, ahead of Honda HRC Castrol’s Joan Mir and Morbidelli.

It proved to be a particularly difficult afternoon for Marc Marquez. The Ducati rider struggled with rear grip as the Sprint progressed and fell through the order, eventually finishing ninth and holding onto the final points-paying position by just 0.027 seconds.

The result allowed Bezzecchi to move ahead of Marquez into third in the championship standings.

More importantly for Martin, the Sprint victory increased his advantage over second-placed Ogura by another three points, giving the Spaniard a 17-point championship lead heading into Sunday.

Martin will once again start from pole for the 20-lap British Grand Prix, alongside Fernandez and Ogura, giving Aprilia another opportunity to build on a Saturday in which its machinery occupied every position on the front row and every step of the Sprint podium.

The British Grand Prix gets underway at Silverstone at 1pm local time on Sunday.
