Formula E is preparing to enter a new era with the arrival of the GEN4 race car for the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season, introducing the fastest, most powerful and most technologically advanced machine in the championship’s history.
The next-generation car has been designed to push the limits of electric motorsport while maintaining Formula E’s commitment to sustainability and road-relevant innovation.
The GEN4 car will produce up to 600kW of power, equivalent to more than 815 horsepower, making it the most powerful Formula E car ever built. Drivers will also benefit from active all-wheel drive throughout every phase of the race, allowing for greater acceleration, improved traction and more dynamic wheel-to-wheel racing.
One of its headline figures is its acceleration. Formula E says the GEN4 car will sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds, placing it among the quickest accelerating racing cars in the world.
Beyond outright speed, the car introduces several major technical developments, including an active differential, dual aerodynamic configurations and enhanced regenerative braking. Together, these systems are designed to improve overtaking opportunities while demonstrating technologies that could influence future road-going electric vehicles.
Formula E says the increase in performance has also influenced where the championship races.
Rather than relying solely on temporary street circuits, the series will visit more permanent venues capable of safely showcasing the GEN4 car’s increased speed while remaining accessible from major cities. That shift has resulted in new races at the Circuit of The Americas, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch.
The championship is also introducing a new race format specifically to showcase the GEN4’s performance.
Known as E-Prix Unleashed, the 30-minute sprint race will allow drivers to exploit the unrestricted capabilities of the car in a format focused on speed rather than energy conservation. The traditional 45-minute E-Prix will remain, continuing to place greater emphasis on strategy, energy management and the use of Pit Boost.
Sustainability remains central to the GEN4 project.
Formula E says the car has been built using 100 per cent recyclable or reusable materials, with ethical sourcing and reduced environmental impact considered throughout the supply chain. From its battery technology to its tyres and bodywork, every component has been designed with circular manufacturing principles in mind.
The GEN4 era begins when the 2026/27 Formula E season gets underway in Jeddah this December, marking the start of what the championship believes will be its fastest and most exciting chapter yet.
