Defender is taking its Dakar Rally success from the desert to the road, announcing a road-legal evolution of the D7X-R that powered the British marque to victory on its debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally.

Mark Cameron, Managing Director, Defender, said: “We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before. First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X-R and then we asked: could we make the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.

“It’s the ultimate expression of adventure and is a true reflection of how we embrace the impossible. It embodies not only the spirit of the Defender Rally team but our continued and historic legacy of off-road innovation. This limited-run model will showcase everything we’ve learned in some of the toughest environments and most competitive conditions imaginable. An authentic Defender, made from unstoppable DNA.”

The Defender Dakar Design Preview Model was revealed on Friday evening at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering, in California, as part of Monterey Car Week.

The exclusive limited-run model draws heavily on the competition machine, with Defender engineers developing uprated geometry, enhanced suspension and off-road body adaptations to bring some of the D7X-R’s rally-raid capability to the road.

Rather than creating a Dakar-inspired appearance package, Defender has retained several of the rally car’s fundamental components.

The road-legal Defender Dakar shares its D7x body architecture, transmission, driveline and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with the D7X-R, with those elements themselves based on the Defender OCTA.

Freed from the regulations governing the competition car, the V8 will produce 635PS and 750Nm of torque, with greater cooling also incorporated into the road-going model.

Its competition influence extends to the chassis, with the Defender Dakar featuring a wider track and increased ride height. It will run on 35-inch Advanced All-Terrain Tyres mounted on new forged 20-inch wheels, alongside coil suspension with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers.

New Dunes and Gravel Drive modes will also feature, along with Flight Mode, which was originally developed for the competition car to help manage landings across extreme and varied terrain.

Rokas Baciuška and co-driver Oriol Vidal took the #502 Defender to victory in the Stock class, leading a strong showing from all three of the team’s entries.

Sara Price and Sean Berriman finished second in the #504 car, while Stéphane Peterhansel and Mika Metge brought the #500 Defender home fourth.

All three crews reached the finish after 14 days of competition, with the team recording a 1-2-3 result on ten of the rally’s 13 stages. Collectively, the three D7X-Rs covered 24,000km during the event.

The success provided an immediate demonstration of the capabilities of the D7X-R and now some of that competition influence is making its way back to the road.

The connection is particularly visible on the exterior, where the Defender Dakar features roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon-fibre raised air intakes and a carbon-fibre bonnet.

Extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, signature mud flaps, a tailgate blanking plate and additional underbody protection further distinguish the Dakar from its road-going Defender stablemates.

The model will be offered in a range of colours, led by the distinctive Dakar Sand body and Yanbu Turquoise roof combination inspired by the race-winning D7X-R livery. Narvik Black and Alaska White will also be available with optional Matte Protective Film.

The motorsport theme continues inside, where Defender has opted for a 2+2 seating configuration with unique race seats specifically designed for the front of the Dakar.

Optional four-point racing harnesses will be available, while the rear stowage area has been designed to accommodate race helmets. The loadspace will also feature a specially engineered mounting for the spare wheel and an air compressor.

The Defender Dakar Design Preview Model shown in California provides the first look at the road-legal evolution of the company’s Dakar-winning machine, combining elements developed through competition with the foundations of the Defender OCTA from which the D7X-R was created.

Registrations of interest are already being collected, with the Defender Dakar set to become available to reserve from early 2027.

Further technical details and specifications will be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
