Marco Bezzecchi delivered a masterclass in recovery at the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia, storming back from a disastrous start to snatch victory in Saturday’s Sprint at Mandalika.
“It was a fantastic race. Unfortunately, we have to understand what happened at the start because I lost a lot of time. But afterwards, I was so confident, so fast,” Bezzecchi said after the win.
Starting from pole after breaking the lap record in qualifying, the Aprilia Racing rider was left reeling as he bogged down off the line and slipped to eighth place on the opening lap.
The Italian methodically fought his way through the pack, picking off rivals with clinical overtakes to claw his way back into contention. At the front, Fermín Aldeguer looked to have the race under control, leading the majority of the 13-lap dash and managing the pace with impressive composure.
But the drama reached its peak on the final lap. Bezzecchi closed the gap and launched his decisive move at Turn 10, diving past Aldeguer to take the lead. He held firm to the line, claiming victory by just 0.157s in one of the most thrilling Sprints of the season.
Behind the leading duo, Raúl Fernández secured a well-deserved podium in third, while Pedro Acosta’s early crash robbed him of a chance to fight at the front. Marc Márquez, who had been in the hunt, was handed a long-lap penalty and slipped down the order, while defending champion Francesco Bagnaia endured another difficult afternoon at the back.
